Judy Moore had been caught up in the world of drugs and it was taking her down to where she was losing motivation to do just about anything anymore. By the grace of God, He sent some people along to encourage her to let God have a say in her life, and she wisely listened and then responded.
Once she began doing that, her comprehension and understanding of something the Bible soberly addresses and warns CHRISTIANS of became of much greater interest to her, because she was getting very tired of the abuse she was receiving from other people. Bible passages such as:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8)
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:11-13).
Judy began to not only diligently seek God about who Jesus Christ REALLY is, she also began to diligently seek God about what the two above passages of scripture REALLY means. To her sobering amazement, she had no recourse but to admit to herself that there is a full-blown spiritual battle going on in the unseen spirit realm between good and evil that is trying to control the will of humans, and Judy had been a victim of evil without her even fully realizing WHO was really behind it all.
There is a subtle yet deceptive teaching in certain segments of Christianity saying that “Jesus defeated Satan at the cross, therefore Christians NEVER have to concern ourselves about Satan or demons, because to do so will just give them power they really do not have.” That, dear reader, is a twisting of the truth. Satan attempted to defeat God’s plan to give mankind a chance to be reconciled back to God by having their sins forgiven; atoned for; to receive an imputed righteousness that is acceptable to God so that they can be in His presence and stay in His presence for all eternity -- but Satan was not successful in accomplishing his plan in doing that. Matter of fact, Satan thought that if he could destroy Jesus by killing Him, then God the Father’s plan would be rendered useless. WRONG SATAN WAS! What Satan was meaning for his evil intent, God was using Satan for mankind’s GOOD, and Satan didn’t have a CLUE of it, until it was too late!
Satan’s PLAN was defeated to stop the promised Messiah (the Messiah being none other than Jesus Christ) from fulfilling His mission from God the Father on behalf of the human race here on Earth, and that mission of God was to take full punishment for each and every person’s sins, which He DID by being crucified on the cross, and the visible proof of that victory was that Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead three days later, and many spirits who had been waiting for this moment in time were released from captivity and were allowed to follow Jesus into the heavenlies! (See: Matthew 27:52-53)
But don’t be confused by the twisting of that fact by the teaching that Satan is a “Defeated foe in that God stripped all power from Satan and the demons once Jesus resurrected.” Satan and his demon helpers will one day in the future be stripped of all their power and locked up in prison by God, but that time has not yet happened. The power and freedom that Satan and the demons had to influence humanity prior to Jesus dying on the cross was not stripped from them after Jesus resurrected from the grave. If anyone thinks it was, logically ask yourself then, WHY did the Holy Spirit give us 1 Peter 5:8-9 and Ephesians 6:10-18? – those being just two key portions of scripture revealing just how much influence demonic spirits STILL have over you and I?
An important note here: Christians are never to fear what Satan and demons might be able to do to them … but they are not to be ignorant of Satan’s influence and devices and strategies either. If a Christian does not learn to discern when evil is trying to affect them and/or humanity as a whole, or already has been affecting them, they won’t know to resist the devil, as 1 Peter 5:9 exhorts them to do: Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
Without turning this page into an exhaustive teaching regarding spiritual warfare issues, it is important to know that God certainly COULD have stripped Satan and the demons of all of their power and ability to influence the will of mankind when Jesus died on the cross, but God chose not to do that for several different reasons. One of those reasons is to use evil spirits as a means to form disciples of Jesus Christ into the likeness of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 12 is the classic understanding of this). As God has chosen pressure to form diamonds in the ground, in His wisdom, He has chosen to allow demonic spirits, in part, to be the “pressure” to form born again Christians to be “spiritual diamonds.” Pure gold must go through a heating process to become pure. The heat God uses, in part, to make born again Christians into purer gold is demonic harassment against them. Satan and the demons are more than willing to oblige, because of all things they hate, it is what born again Christians will one day receive from God, and Satan and the demons know they never WILL! Saying it another way, you and I can receive eternal salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. The fallen angels cannot nor ever will.
It is also important to know that God doesn’t “ask” nor “command” demonic spirits to do His bidding either, I believe. All God has to do to get demons to do His bidding is remove some of the angelic protection around Christians, and demons rush in as quickly as they are allowed by God to rush in to harass that person. In other words, as flies seek out road kill on their own, demons are looking for “human road kill” to devour, yet they can only do so as God sovereignly allows. God sometimes will allow demons to harass a person to drive that person to make a serious decision to either accept or reject Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Other times God will allow demons to harass a Christian to show them that sooner or later, there are consequences when on-going sin is not dealt with in that Christian. There are other times that God will allow demons to harass us simply to remind us that we are not capable of being nearly “self-sufficient” as we would like to be. In the Apostle Paul’s case as addressed in 2 Cor. 12, God also uses demons if he so chooses to help keep us humble, again something our sinful fleshly nature hates doing. As demonic pressure becomes more intense upon a Christian, they began to seek God about the weapons God has given them to battle demonic attacks against them, and how to wisely use them, as Ephesians 6:10-18 addresses.
