SET FREE AND LOVING IT!
Hello, my name is Rebecca...I would like to share with you about my life, and even though I had given my life to the Lord when I was twelve, the fears, anxieties, and negative thinking did not disappear. I battled fiercely off and on until now. Please read on...
Growing up in Vermont has given me great memories. I often go back to those mornings on the farm, struggling to get up at 4:00 to milk the cows, but happy to see the sunrise at 5, as I was handling the morning milking.
I also have memories of never doing quite enough for my dad, hiding behind the woodshed so he wouldn't see me. He would never hurt us physically but emotionally my mom and us kids were often crushed. I also have memories of reoccurring nightmares and the presence of evil.
There was also a time during the height of my eating disorder when I was twenty that I remember the thought popping into my mind that I should take a whole bottle of Tylenol. I was conscious that it was not my own thought and that it was evil. My mom was there and we prayed and moved on, but that was definitely an awful feeling and terrible memory.
I gave my life to the Lord when I was twelve, however the fears, anxieties, and negative thinking did not disappear. I battled fiercely off and on until now. In college I devoted my life whole heartedly to the LORD and studied Bible. With a BA in Bible and no job opportunities I graduated from college and went to Seminary. Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary is where I got an MA in Biblical Counseling. As I studied in Seminary I learned many truths and became stronger in my faith.
I met my husband Steve where I worked part-time at an engineering company. We fell in love and were married 11 months later. When we married my struggles began to intensify. I wasn't able to maintain the discipline that I had once known, the hour of Bible reading, studying and running and prayer time all before 7 am. I remember struggling so mightily, and looking back, I know it was a spiritual battle. I felt ill, depressed and exhausted for no apparent reason. That was three years ago.
We have continued in our life, marriage and relationship with the LORD. But it was this past winter that we came to a real standstill. My husband was depressed and unhappy. His unhappiness and discontentment with work and life made our whole family pretty miserable. It was very difficult for me; with all my counseling and Biblical training, I still felt powerless to help him. That is when a friend directed us to Set Free Ministries.
Both my husband and I have longed to be free of this cycle of depression, fear, and hurt. I had only heard negative comments about Neil Anderson and his work while I was in Seminary, but we decided to give it a try. My experience has been completely amazing. Going through the books, Victory over the Darkness and The Bondage Breaker, I have finally understood who I am in Christ. I am a child of God. I have been born into the family of God and have received the freedom of the cross. My sin has been forgiven and Satan has no right to hold any power or authority over me because Jesus Christ is my LORD and has paid a debt I could not pay. This knowledge moved from my head to my heart when I sat with the two wonderful counselors and specifically confessed and renounced sins, fears, and unforgiveness of the past that had become strongholds and spiritual bondage in my life.
I no longer fear going to sleep. I have not had a nightmare since I was half way through the Bondage Breaker. One night I was continuing to struggle with evil thoughts at bedtime and in my sleep. I prayed in the name of Jesus over my mind and my sleep, proclaiming to Satan that Jesus Christ is my LORD and Satan has no right to be in my presence or interrupt my sleep.
My husband has also been going through the Set Free Ministries and it has brought such unity to our marriage. It has become very clear that we are in a spiritual battle. There is a reason why the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write Ephesians 6 urging us to put on the full armor of God. We are to wear the armor because we are in a battle. So often we would fight amongst ourselves when we felt tension and discord, now we become aware of the enemy and the lies he is trying to sell us. Now we put on our armor, stand in the truth and confess and renounce the lies. Now we turn to help each other when we feel the fiery darts rather than look at each other and point blame for the unknown hurt we feel. I am so thankful for this ministry. I will never be the same. I will never counsel the same. I am free and I want to help others to be set free!
Thank you and God bless you for reading my testimony! I pray that it has helped encourage you in any struggles you may be going through.
