Jesus Did It!
By: Chuck Berrington
When I was in seventh grade, one day I was sitting alone at a school table, reading a pocket Bible because I was curious about what it said. A teenage girl I didn't know asked me if she could sit at the table with me. Looking up from the Bible, I said, "Sure." Identifying herself as Jennifer, she told me that she had seen me and my family at church and that she knew that I sat alone there. She stated that she would sit with me the next time I was at church because she knew that I had stood up for her around the group of guys I hung around with; she'd heard everything I'd said to them. She said that was the kindest thing someone had ever done for her.
One day, in church, I was sitting alone when Jennifer came up and asked me if she could sit with me. I told her she could, then got up to let her into where I was sitting. At that time she told me that her father wanted to meet me after church to tell me how grateful he was for what I did for her. After the service, Jennifer and I waited for her father to talk with me; when he came over to where we were waiting, I was surprised to find out that he was the pastor of that church! He told me about when Jennifer came home crying about everyone saying things about her when her back was turned, and then what she'd heard me say to those people. He told me because of that I was the only person who could be near Jennifer.
After that day Jennifer and I started to hang out with each otter. She knew that I had trouble understanding the Bible, so over the next couple of weeks she helped me with it and also started witnessing to me. (At that time my spirit had been telling me that I needed to receive Jesus Christ as my Savior.) Because of this, I asked Him to came into my heart at the age of 12.
For a while I did well spiritually, but when I attended high school the next year, I stopped going to church and started hanging with the wrong people. We started doing bad stuff, like breaking and entering into houses as well as stealing things from stores and cars - things that regular people wouldn't do. Doing all of that crime finally caught up with me. In 1993, at the age of 13, I was arrested and sentenced to six months of probation.
After I graduated from high school I went to a tech school and started hanging with people who were going to bars to drink. That's when I started drinking, at the age of 20.In 2001, when I was 21, I lost my grandmother. She and I had been very close. I could talk with her if I had any problems that were on my mind. Due to this loss, I started drinking alcohol heavily because I thought that no one cared about me. I wanted to be by myself so people wouldn't see me drunk: a person who had problems in his life.
At that point I thought and felt like I had nothing to lose in life. Therefore, I turned to drinking alcohol heavily so that I wouldn't feel like there wasn't a person who cared for me. To put it frankly, I didn't want to live anymore.
I was at my mother's one day, house-sitting, when "Betty" - a female friend who kept an eye on me - came over to hang out. She found me passed out on the couch, not breathing. After calling 911, she performed CPR on me, getting my heart started again. The ambulance finally arrived and took me to the hospital.
Betty called my mother and told her where I was and said that she'd fill her in on why I was there after my mother talked to the doctor about my condition. The doctor told my mother that I had overdosed an pills and alcohol but he'd pumped my belly. He also told her that even though my liver should have been damaged, it was in good condition.
When I finally woke up in the hospital, I wondered how I got there. The doctor told me what happened, then said that I made it to the hospital just in time. If I'd shown up a little later, I would've died. I looked over at the room's couch; Betty was asleep on it. I asked him how long she'd been there. He said that she'd been there all night because she hadn't wanted to leave my side.Betty finally woke up, rushed to my side, gave me a big hug, and told me that I had made her worry about me. The doctor left us alone so that we could talk with each other. At that time Betty told me that she was moving in with me so she could keep a better eye on me.
When I'd drink I'd curse the Lord and the people who cared about me. I was very mean to the people who tried to help me. In fact, I felt that I didn't need any help. I wanted people to just leave me alone. As a result of such an attitude, I was really coldhearted towards them. I also didn't care if I hurt them in any way that I could. The Lord told me that I needed help. I told Him that He was a bunch of bull crap.
On a fairly regular basis I went out to bars with some co-workers after we'd finished work for the day. Every time I went, though, I got into a fight, even when the other person started it.
At the age of 21, I still wasn't ready to go back to the Lord. I wanted to do what I wanted to do. But, like clockwork, the Holy Spirit kept telling me that I needed to come back to the Lord and repent of my sins or I would go to hell. Finally His message did its work. In January 2002 I entered the Christ-based alcohol program held at the Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While I was there, following their program, the Holy Spirit told me that I didn't have to live my life the way that I was, and I needed to renew my faith and walk with the Lord again. So, I went down on my knees to pray to the Lord to do just that. It wasn't long before the Lord took away the desire for alcohol. I haven't had a drink since 2002 and I'm still going strong. That year everything started to come together for me spiritually; the Lord welcomed me back to His Family.
While I was still at Mel Trotter Ministries I had an unexpected visit from an aunt and uncle I hadn't seen since I was little. They invited me to stay with them until I got on my feet, so I did.
While I was living with them I had another unexpected visit ... from my real father. He and I had a long talk and spent time getting to know one another better. He showed me where he was living; we also saw my uncles whom I hadn't seen in quite some time.
The Lord did many other things for me too. He took away a lot of hate, anger, self-pity, dishonor, jealousy, wrathful outbursts, selfishness, wrong ambitions, dissension, heresy, envy, drunkenness, and revelries; He replaced them with love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He has been there when I least expected it; He still catches me when I fall and keeps me safe throughout the days and nights.
I am free; free from the bondage of sin that weighed me down in life. When I am down in a state of mind and I don't have anyone to turn to, I turn to Jesus Christ when I hit rock bottom in my life. He provides my needs in life and is my Rock, my Fortress, my Strength, my Cornerstone, my Foundation, my Friend, my Redeemer. Jesus Christ is the first person in my life before any of my family members; they came in second. He has been looking after me, making sure that I am okay and keeps me out of trouble. I thank God that He won't let the devil bring me down in life.
As I bring my testimony to a close, I would like to share a very special verse with you. My dear grandmother originally introduced me to it. Whenever I think about or read this powerhouse of a verse, it reminds me of what I went through in life as well as what I still go through from time to time. May you find it a comfort as I have.
To You I will cry, O
Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me,
Lest, if You are silent to me,
I become like those who go down to the pit.
Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You,
When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary. (Psalm 28:1-2)
