IF YOU SIN JUST ONE TIME AFTER YOU BECOME SAVED, IS THERE NO CHANCE OF GETTING FORGIVEN AGAIN?

Jesus Did It!

Satan loves to try to trick new Christians into zeroing in on the following bible verse to put confusion and fear in them, knowing they have not learned the proper rules of bible interpretation - yet:

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.  – Hebrews 11:26-27

The application of the above scripture is addressing issues of Old Covenant LAW verses New Covenant GRACE, and to pick up the flow of the topic matter, one needs to start reading, starting with Hebrews chapter 7, then continuing on into chapters 8, 9, 10 and then on into chapter 11.

Stating it simply, the old covenant law way of having one’s sins covered for a YEAR was by the shedding of blood of innocent sacrificial lambs by a Jewish Levitical priest.

But after Jesus Christ the innocent Lamb of God was offered up as a sacrifice for not only the sins of the Jews, but the entire world – meaning Gentiles (non Jews) as well, the old covenant law was officially done away with because the new covenant law of grace was officially implemented by God.  And only one sacrifice was necessary under the new covenant -- not once every year like under the old covenant law.

Hebrews 10:14 assures us of this truth:  For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Thus the meaning of Hebrews 11:26-27 is that if you come out of the old covenant law of having your sins covered (never forgiven by God under that system -- just covered over for a year) and accept the new covenant way that God provided to have our sins not only forgiven by God, but also forgotten by God as well -- in other words, becoming Christians because we believe the death of Jesus Christ paid full penalty for all our past, present and sins we may commit yet in the futureand then make a decision to decide we would rather go back to the old covenant way of having our sins taken care of … then YES – there is great cause for alarm for that person  because they are in essence insulting God for what He provided through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Reading just a little further in Hebrews, you can silence Satan once and for all if you’re still not convinced of what you’re reading thus far.  We’ll start reading in Hebrews chapter 12:

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.  You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. – Hebrews 12:1-4 (NKJV)

This above bible scripture passage is encouraging Christians to work diligently with God to get set free from the sin or sins we keep giving into, especially those that are hindering our relationship with God the most.  (Notice it doesn’t say we get no further chance to get right with God if we sin just ONE time!).

Then the scripture passage encourages Christians not to grow weary and discouraged because they can’t get set immediately free from the sin or sins that have been so easily “ensnaring them”.   Patience is called for.

Bottom line is that no Christian this side of eternity walks in sinless perfection in thoughts.  It’s impossible to attain.  Yes – the sin or sins that have severe consequences need to be stopped and God will help us stop committing them, as long as we persistent and remain patient with God and don’t grow frustrated with Him that we aren’t getting victory at times like we might like to get it.

But we have no “license” to be sinning because of God’s grace either once we become Christians.  God clearly wills that we constantly seek to keep from sinning, and he promises we’ll be rewarded for it at the Judgment Day.

Anyone who tries to convince you, however, that you can walk in sinless perfection in this life in ALL your thoughts and actions indefinitely, is deceived.  If it were possible to attain indefinite sinless perfection in this life … then Jesus Christ died in vain.

Yes – it is true that the moment you get truly saved your are as holy in the sight of God as you can possibly be, because of what Jesus Christ accomplished for you on the cross, but that’s only HALF of the matter.  The second half of the matter is that now that God see’s you as holy as Christ is holy, start living up to it!  Start striving to walk as sin free as Jesus Christ walked while He was done here on earth!

Yet here’s the factual certainty of the matter.  You’ll never walk in sinless perfection like He walked – not in this life.  Because if it were possible, which it isn’t, then Jesus would never have had to leave heaven and come to earth to die on the cross for the sins of every person – including yours.  He could have simply let YOU accomplish the task of going to the cross and let you do all the suffering in His place, right?!

Christians have the imputed righteousness of God given to them at salvation.  Because it’s been given to us free of charge … let us strive diligently to live up to it!

Christians have a power that non-Christians don’t have to help them stop sinning.  Christians have the Holy Spirit.  Non-Christians don’t have the Holy Spirit.  Thus Christians are without excuse in trying to say “I can’t stop sinning, so what’s the use of even trying to stop anymore?!”

Yet no matter how many times a Christian sins, there’s always forgiveness from God.  “Blasphemy!” – do I hear someone screaming?  Would God ask you and I to do something He refuses to do?  Not the God I know.  Matthew 18:21-22 couldn’t make it any clearer:

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive Him?  Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”

So the legalist would say that God only forgives us 490 times for a sin, and then He’s done forgiving us after that, right?!  No – the legalist would be very wrong.  The point Jesus is making should be obvious. “NEVER stop forgiving someone who sins against you.”

If God puts that demand on us, we have every right to believe we can put the same demand on Him, which He has no problem with.

1 John 1:9 assures us that we have unlimited forgiveness from God.

2 Timothy 4:8 indirectly assures us that the less we sin, the more we’ll be rewarded for it.
