MUST CHRISTIANS TRY TO KEEP THE 10 COMMANDMENTS TO GET SAVED ... AND/OR STAY SAVED?

By:  Norm Rasmussen

The answer to the above question is clearly:  "No".

And here is WHY:

1:  There would have been no reason for Jesus Christ to die on the cross and the New Testament to be written (New Covenant to be established) if people are SAVED FROM THE PENALTY OF THEIR SINS by trying to keep the 10 Commandments.

2:  Even so, the practice of trying to keep the 10 Commandments NEVER saved anyone ANYWAY, because no one (except Jesus Christ) kept the 10 Commandments perfectly.  Hence the need for the Jewish Priests to offer up animal blood sacrifices as a temporary means for the sins of the people prior to the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

3:  NOW we do NOT have to try to keep the 10 Commandments to GET saved from the penalty of our sins, or try to keep the 10 Commandments to STAY SAVED from the penalty of our sins.

What NOW saves us from our sins is BELIEVING that the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross paid the penalty IN FULL for all of our past, present, and future sins.

4:  Trying to obey the 10 Commandments does NOT get us saved, nor KEEP us saved from our sins.  However, Christians are NOW empowered by the Holy Spirit in their attempts to keep the 10 Commandments much easier than the people were able to keep them prior to the pouring out of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, as is recorded in the Book of Acts, because the 10 Commandments are certainly holy and pleasing to God when we endeavor to try to keep them.

5:  Is God DELIGHTED that Christians work diligently at trying to OBEY the 10 Commandments?  ABSOLUTELY!  The attempts on our part of trying to diligently obey the 10 Commandments will be rewarded on the Judgment Day … and very likely God will make certain FAVOR will come to us in this life as well in various degrees.

6:  NEVERTHELESS … the book of Galatians warns Christians to be careful about letting anyone fool (persuade;trick; deceive) you into believing that attempts to keep the 10 Commandments will get you MORE saved – or KEEP you more saved.

7:  Christians are NOT saved BY “their good works” (i.e.; keeping the 10 Commandments and/or practicing other spiritual disciplines).  Christians ARE saved to do good works of righteousness, which they will be rewarded for … but just because they do good works of righteousness pleasing to God STILL does not get them saved from their sins, nor keep them saved from their sins.

Hebrews 10:11-14 clearly says so:

And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

But this Man (Jesus Christ), after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God (The Father), from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.

For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

BELIEVING that the ONE sacrifice of Jesus Christ (who was none other than God HIMSELF) was/is completely – totally – pleasing and acceptable to God the Father to pay FULL PENALTY for our past, present and future sins is the ONLY thing that gets us saved and ultimately keeps us saved from the penalty for those sins.

(If the above highlighted sentence in yellow was found to be untrue (which will never happen) ... then the New Testament (New Covenant) can be thrown away and completely discarded, which would then mean no one can have assurance that they are saved from the penalty of their sins at all.  Furthermore, the death of Jesus Christ would have been a totally wasted sacrifice on His part, and the heart of the Christian message (That message being: That Jesus Christ paid full penalty for our sins) would be the greatest spiritual deception ever to be introduced to the human race).

Though this isn’t part of the question asked, it should be mentioned, because ANOTHER important question comes up:  “How does a Christian get forgiveness for their sins that they are PRESENTLY committing, or might commit years from now?”

The answer:  By BELIEVING and OBEYING 1 John 1:8-9:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
