IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE SPIRITUALLY ANCHORED IN FACT OR FICTION?
By: Norm Rasmussen
You probably know all of this, but just in case you don’t, maybe what I share will help you a little regarding spiritual things.
After many years of pursuing spiritual matters - seeking answers - I’ve come to the understanding that there are really only two categories of reality. They are: 1 - Reality from God’s perspective. 2 - Reality from our extremely limited human perspective.
God’s reality is truly all that matters, because it is FACT. If what we believe about spiritual matters does not clearly line up with God’s TRUE reality, we will come to a very rude awakening when we pass on to the next life when we find out that what He BELIEVES about matters and how He thinks and acts concerning all creatures He's created is suddenly what becomes all important. Thus the sooner I start thinking the way HE thinks about spiritual matters, odds increase greatly that He might be more inclined to shine a greater amount of blessings my way. Afterall, who of us will refuse God's blessings coming our way if we know how to help position ourselves more favorably for that to happen?
I've been pretty much like everyone else growing up. I personally took issue with the Old and New Testament Bible for most of my earlier years. I had my beliefs about the Bible and they were not what they are today, I assure you!
A time came in my life when a light bulb turned on inside my head. I came to the sobering conclusion that no matter WHAT I believed about the Bible, and/or what I believed about God … I could NOT prove that the Bible is an untrustworthy source to learn of God’s reality.
Saying it another way, in my mind, I became my own judge concerning the Bible, and had the attitude of: If anyone can PROVE to me that the Bible can be trusted as FACT, then I’ll spend more time studying it. Otherwise, I’m not going to waste my time.”
However … a time came when ANOTHER light bulb came on, so to speak, inside my mind, and the question became: “Can I PROVE that the holy Bible is NOT fact from God’s perspective? Can I PROVE that it isn’t God’s true REALITY?”
That began to eat away at me, making me very irritable inside, because in all honesty, I could NOT. I could not prove the Bible is not God’s reality, nor was it untrue at ALL. Gulp …
Then the realization descended upon my brain that if what I believe in this life is nothing but a bunch of beliefs that literally was in opposition to God’s TRUE reality of things … reality from HIS perspective, in other words … I might not be one that God would be so quick to want to warm up to, especially in the next life, let alone this life. Another gulp …
It was after that that I decided I would accept change if need be to what I had believed before about all things spiritual. Nearly 30 years later from that earlier time in my life as of this writing … I’m so thankful I DID!
A HUGE dividend in doing so is to have the full realization that God isn’t interested in people who refuse to see and believe ways contrary to HIS reality of things – His reality of TRUTH. What God IS interested in doing is making Himself real and alive in the spirits of those who have come to the realization that existence is NOT what I can do to make me happy, but rather – what can I do to be pleasing to the Creator?
Have we not learned in marriage that to have a fulfilling marriage, if all I stay focused on is what I want my spouse to do to make ME happy, and hardly even be concerned about what makes my spouse happy … I start having marital problems that often leads to separation and/or divorce.
The same applies to any enjoyable friendship. No one will be an enjoyable friend if all I demand out of that friend is to focus on making ME happy. It is a two way show, isn’t it? In fact, life teaches us that the more we concentrate on trying to come up with ways to make out friend happy, the more our friends strives to make me happy.
I’ve discovered that’s the exact same principle that needs to be employed with God. If our primary purpose in life is to be pleasing to God in whatever ways that truly please Him, can we expect our friendship with Him to grow better and better? Absolutely!
The New Testament Bible makes it very clear HOW we can be pleasing to God, were you aware of that? As a matter of fact, as a person diligently investigates the New Testament Bible, it becomes nothing short of amazing how easy it is to understand what God wants us doing to be pleasing to Him.
And is it EASY to do what He asks us to DO to please Him? No way! In fact, it’s IMPOSSIBLE! The only way we can do what God tells us we need to do to please Him is recognize that we need the Holy Spirit more and more to help us be pleasing to God.
Isn’t it a wonderful thing God has given to us – the Holy Spirit – to help us be pleasing to God?
Want to hear something that I’ve also learned out of this search to know God, and what pleases Him?
I don’t HAVE to do anything to try to be pleasing to Him. But I GET to!
What a wonderful place of emotional rest it is to realize that God doesn’t want me motivated to please Him because I HAVE to, or I’m SUPPOSE to.
Rather … I GET to please Him because I WANT to. That adds a dimension of joy that nothing else will add in seeking answers about God, I’ve discovered! It puts some fun in the spiritual quest. I like doing things the FUN way! How about YOU?
Hopes this helps you some ...
