May I share with you about my once precious cat named Weezer? Weezer was a testimony in herself. Since she was just a cat, I will have to speak for her and share what God has done for me concerning this wonderful pet I once had.
You see, when I became born again back in 1979, a married couple from my church gave this cat to me. They told me this cat was a male and that he had been neutered. This cat was about 2 years old at that time and as I said, her name is Weezer. You're probably saying right about now, "Hey, I thought you said this cat was a "he" in the beginning and now you're saying it is a "she" - what's going on here?!" Right? I will get to that a little later on after I share some more background history on her, OK?
In February 1980, I had a serious car accident that almost took my life, but God had other plans for me! Maybe someday I will write about that answer to prayer because it surely was an answer to many peoples' prayers for me that my life would be spared. At that time in my life, (backing up a little here in time, when I first got saved), I had been involved with a man prior to that for about six years. Shortly after I had committed my life to Jesus Christ, I knew I had to let this man go; in other words, break my relationship off with him.
When I had the accident and was in a semi-unconscious state, I began calling out his name. My family, bless their hearts, (not knowing whether I was going live or die), contacted him again for me. Naturally, he came to my bedside while I lay there in the hospital. Well, that was the beginning again of my allowing him back into my life, and falling right back into the sin I had gotten away from. (Remember, I shared with you how I came to own this cat, now I will share with you how I gave her up.) When I took this man back into my life, I gave this cat of mine away to a huge farm about ten miles from where I lived. What was my reason for giving him up? It was because this friend of mine did not like house pets and therefore, I got rid of the cat.
I had to go through some very painful times concerning this male friend of mine and eventually I was led to give him up again - for good this time. In exactly a year from the date of my accident, I met the man who is now my husband. We were married in June of 1982, and after we were married for three years, I began praying to have another pet in my life, mainly because we were not able to have children together. Shortly after I began praying that way, who shows up back in my yard? My beloved pet, Weezer! My husband likes to tease me and say I probably didn't have the same cat, but I knew my cat's meow! She had very strong lungs and a mouth on her that wouldn't quit! You couldn't mistake her voice if you had wanted to!
Now, here comes the story about how I found out "she" was not a "he". After living in a mobile home for the first three years of our marriage, we decided we wanted to buy a home. We bought a very nice brand new starter home and naturally Weezer had to move along with us. With the sale of our mobile home, we were able to buy all new furniture for our new home, and bless Weezer's heart, "he" began clawing on my new furniture. I really didn't have that problem with my old furniture, because that's just what it was, old furniture and I didn't really care if "he" did that to it once in awhile. But now I did care and I had to break down and take him to the Vet to have him declawed, which broke my heart to have to do that to him.
Then another time down the road, after we had been in our new house for about a year or two, Weezer wasn't eating. I took him to the Vet and found out that "he" had some sort of virus and "he" was treated for that and all was well again. It was during that visit to the Vet that I found out that I did not have a "he" cat, but that "he" was a "she". The Vet kept referring to him as a "she" and I said to the Vet, "this is a male cat." He said to me, "Not the last time I looked..." To make a long story short, Weezer had always been a female cat, but I had never checked; I just assumed she was a male from what I had been told in the beginning by my friends who gave her to me. Isn't that wild?!
Ok, now I will get into the miracle part of my beloved pet, Weezer. First let me say that I believe she was an answer to prayer when she came back and found me again after being away from me for three years. She did not look very well - very skinny and scraggly in fact. So I surmised she had been living in the wild for those three years she was away from me and living in the wild and off the land. I failed to mention when I first had given her away to this farm, my niece who lived there at the time, said Weezer had disappeared after two days of being there. That in itself is a miracle that she found me again! It took her three years to find her way back home.
Now, getting back to the subject of our new home and having Weezer declawed; we have now been in this home for 14 years. About four years ago (1995), Weezer began to not feel well again. She wouldn't eat and started to lose her balance as she was walking and whenever she tried to jump up on the furniture, she would fall. This sort of went on for about a week and after praying for her during that time period, I finally decided I had better get her in to the Vet again to see what was wrong with her. His diagnosis was "festibular syndrome," which is a disease older cats get which affects their brain cells and in turn affects their balance or equilibrium. The Vet said that most cats he has treated with that condition did not come out of it and eventually had to be put to sleep.
The Vet was doing all he could to treat Weezer, giving her penicillin shots daily and trying to feed her, but she was not responding favorably at all. In fact, she was withdrawing more and more. My husband - after about four days of Weezer being at the Vet - called me at work that fifth day and suggested that we take her home with us. If she were to get better at all, it would have to be in her own environment. Besides that, all that was around her at the Vet's were barking and screaming dogs continually, and we knew she hated that part of it.
If any of you have a pet or pets of your own, you can understand what was going on inside of me. I felt like I was in a grieving process all that week when Weezer was at the Vet's and not responding at all to treatment. I felt inside that I was going to lose my pet, which to me all these years she had almost become human (at least she acted like it sometimes) and I treated her like she was my baby. May I also say something that is vitally important in this whole story - one morning of that week, I woke up knowing that I was going to fight for my cat's life. I was not about to let the enemy (Satan) take her life through this sickness. So I began to do warfare prayer on her behalf. Yep, that's right folks - I did warfare prayer for my cat! And it worked! God honored my faith and determination not to let Satan kill my cat through this disease.
So we took Weezer home again. I really began to pray and ask God to show me what I could do to help her. My stepdaughter had called me to see how Weezer was and I told her: 'Not so well'. She asked me if I had tried force-feeding her. I told her I had never thought of that! I believe that was direction from the Lord to show me what to do. I had no idea how to force-feed a cat, so I went to the public library and looked up books on caring for older cats. I learned through a book how to do exactly that.
I began to force-feed my beloved Weezer. I literally had to wrap her in a bath towel so only her head was sticking out, and held her mouth open while with my other hand spooned the food into her mouth. She hated it but I kept talking to her and loving her through it all. As the days and weeks went by she began to respond and regain her strength back again to the point where she would eat on her own. That was four years ago and she was still going strong right after that time - eating everything she could and constantly "talking" to me. She was a miracle not only once but twice since I knew her and each time an answer to my prayers!
This story is just two examples of answered prayer in my life. The first one being, Weezer coming back to me after being gone for three years; and secondly, God sparing her life because of my prayers for her. My heavenly Father has let me know through this experience that He cares about every little thing in our lives - even our pets. It just took persevering prayer and trusting in Him on my part for Him to honor my prayers and then He did the rest! He cares about everything that is important to us even if it is an animal. I knew that one day I would have to face the day that my beloved Weezer would have to die because she was very old - 21 years. But I also knew God would continue to prepare my heart for that day. Up until that point, I just enjoyed her while I could and thanked God for honoring my prayers for her. He is a faithful, loving God in my book!
It encourages us in Mark 11:24: "Therefore I say to you, whatever thing you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them." Mature believers realize this is not a "ticket" to get anything they want from God, but it is the privilege God has given Christian believers to go to Him and receive from Him those things that will GLORIFY HIM. If God had not honored my prayer and trust in Him that He would heal my Weezer, I would not have this testimony to share about His goodness, and His faithfulness in honoring His Word in Mark 11:24.
This answered prayer about Weezer also has reinforced something else in me: Though we all must die if Jesus doesn't come back for us first -- there is a time to believe God to heal sickness and disease in OUR bodies. If a sick person dies before their time, God receives no glory. Discerning one's time to go home to be with the Lord must be imparted by the Holy Spirit. Otherwise we have every right to confidently do what Mark 11:24 says we can do: Believe for answered prayer -- believe for a MIRACLE!
Thank you for taking the time to read my answered prayer about Weezer. I hope this has ministered to you or encouraged you in some way. If you have an answered prayer about your pet that is God glorifying, we would love to have you share it with us! With your blessing, we would like to add it to our website in the Answers to Prayer section. You can either mail it to us or e-mail it, whichever way is more convenient for you. Thanks again and God bless you!
ADDITIONAL NEWS UPDATE ON WEEZER: God did indeed prepare my heart for Weezer's leaving our life and home. Shortly before she decided to leave and not come back, a veterinarian had given me that piece of advice - that that is exactly what she probably would do when her time to die came for her. In about late summer of 1998, Weezer must have decided it was her time to go. I let her out one morning and she never came back.
Oh yes, I was hurting and my heart was broken over the loss of her, but you know what? God knew that and He knew exactly what would help me get over this pain in my heart. About two months of my beloved Weezer being gone, I received a phone call from my stepdaughter asking, "How would you like have two cats?" TWO CATS?? It just so happened for her that her new home she and her husband had just moved into didn't allow pets. She was looking for a home for her two cats only temporarily until such time when they would be purchasing a new home and would be able to have them back..
I told her I would need to talk to her dad about taking TWO cats instead of just one. My husband and I talked it over and decided that maybe this would be something good for me to take my mind off from missing Weezer so much. So we took them in just temporarily, mind you. We had them for about a good two months and I kept telling the cats and myself that this home was not their permanent home, that they would have to go back to our daughter, Shawna. I knew in my heart this was only temporary and I did pretty well in my thinking and heart about that. Whenever I would start having longing thoughts of wanting to keep them, I would shove those thoughts aside and refuse to think about it.
Then the day came when our daughter called us again concerning the cats, and this time said, "How would you like to KEEP two cats?" She and her husband had decided that it was not a good time for them to get into debt and buy a new home. If you can imagine, just think of the joy that swept my heart at that moment! I was so overjoyed and excited! I really had begun to grow to love and was beginning to be so attached to those cats. It didn't take me long to tell her that, yes, we would love to keep them!
I choose to believe that God knew exactly what I needed. He not only provided me with a new much younger version of my Weezer, but He also doubled my blessing with this big beautiful black and white hunk of a cat! As you can see, the one in the sink (his name is Louie), looks a lot like my Weezer. He is younger than the one on the far right and is very lively and rambunctious. The black & white one (his name is Mo), is about a year older and is very big and a laid back sort of fellow.
My heart is totally healed and restored about losing Weezer through the gift of these other two beautiful cats that have been placed in my life. Thank you Lord for your faithfulness!
